Whites and Sulphur Butterflies found in Pennsylvania There are approximately 1000 species of Whites and Sulphur butterflies worldwide; 55-60 species in North America. Of that amount - 14 species are found in Pennsylvania. Most peirids are some shade of white, yellow, or yellowish-green; a few have bright orange tips and greenish-yellow marbling. There is often dramatic color variations seasonally and between sexes.
